There is a captivating history to the Cambodia casinos that lie just across the border from neighboring Thailand, in which casino wagering is against the law. Eight gambling dens are anchored in a generally small area in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime destination, a 3 to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai laborers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a number of controls requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is required to be largely Thai; however, investment sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 17:00, and even though visas are allegedly needed to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is correct of many borders.
The original Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only 1 gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked barge gambling den, contains 150 slots and sixty gaming tables. The Naga gambling hall never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat, four tables of vingt-et-un, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are one hundred and fifty slot machines and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machine games and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 slot machines and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slots and sixty six of the common table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-around vacation and hotel complex that contains numerous conveniences in addition to the gambling hall, which houses 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slot machines and 88 gaming tables.
