There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just across the dividing line from next door Thailand, where casino gaming is banned. Eight gambling halls are based in a generally tiny area in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime destination, a three to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular gaming locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai laborers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The amazing income gained from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a couple of restrictions requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mostly Thai; however, financing sources are cryptic. The borders are ceremoniously open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and though visas are for all intents and purposes required to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is true of many border crossings.

The first Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only one gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored ship gambling hall, features one hundred and fifty slot machines and sixty tables. The Naga casino never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, four tables of blackjack, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The initial gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown before long opened. There are one hundred and fifty slot machine games and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 slot machines and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and ninety six gaming tables, including eighty seven punto banco (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and sixty six of the normal table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international resort and hotel compound that contains a number of amenities aside from the casino, which contains 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slot machine games and eighty eight tables.
