There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia casinos that sit just across the border from neighboring Thailand, in which gambling hall wagering is not allowed. Eight casinos are situated in a relatively small space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent spot, a three to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai laborers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very couple of Westerners. The phenomenal capital gained from the casinos ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of controls constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; however, funding sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 1700, and although visas are apparently necessary to cross, there are means around this, as is real of many border crossings.

The first Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored ship gambling den, contains 150 slot machine games and sixty table games. The Naga gambling den never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of twenty-one, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The initial gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are 150 slots and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machine games and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred slot machine games and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and 96 table games, including 87 punto banco (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and sixty six of the common gaming tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 casinos in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machine games and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive vacation and hotel building that features numerous conveniences aside from the casino, which contains 10,000 square feet of 130 one armed bandits and 88 tables.
