The prospect of living in Zimbabwe is somewhat of a risk at the current time, so you may imagine that there might be little desire for visiting Zimbabwe’s gambling halls. In fact, it appears to be operating the other way, with the crucial market circumstances creating a bigger desire to play, to try and find a fast win, a way out of the situation.

For nearly all of the locals living on the tiny local wages, there are two popular types of betting, the national lottery and Zimbet. As with practically everywhere else in the world, there is a state lotto where the odds of succeeding are remarkably small, but then the winnings are also remarkably large. It’s been said by economists who understand the subject that the lion’s share do not buy a card with the rational expectation of hitting. Zimbet is based on either the domestic or the English football divisions and involves predicting the results of future matches.

Zimbabwe’s gambling dens, on the other shoe, cater to the considerably rich of the country and travelers. Until not long ago, there was a considerably big sightseeing industry, founded on safaris and visits to Victoria Falls. The market woes and associated violence have cut into this market.

Among Zimbabwe’s gambling halls, there are two in the capital, Harare, the Carribea Bay Resort and Casino, which has five gaming tables and one armed bandits, and the Plumtree gambling den, which has just the slot machine games. The Zambesi Valley Hotel and Entertainment Center in Kariba also has just slot machines. Mutare contains the Monclair Hotel and Casino and the Leopard Rock Hotel and Casino, the two of which have gaming tables, one armed bandits and electronic poker machines, and Victoria Falls houses the Elephant Hills Hotel and Casino and the Makasa Sun Hotel and Casino, both of which offer gaming machines and blackjack, roulette, and craps tables.

In addition to Zimbabwe’s casinos and the above alluded to lottery and Zimbet (which is quite like a parimutuel betting system), there are a total of two horse racing tracks in the nation: the Matabeleland Turf Club in Bulawayo (the 2nd city) and the Borrowdale Park in Harare.

Since the economy has deflated by more than 40 percent in recent years and with the associated deprivation and conflict that has come to pass, it isn’t understood how well the tourist business which is the foundation for Zimbabwe’s gambling halls will do in the in the years to come. How many of them will carry through till things improve is merely not known.
