There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia casinos that sit just over the border from next door Thailand, in which casino wagering is illegal. Eight gambling halls are established in a relatively tiny location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime destination, a three to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular betting centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very couple of Westerners. The amazing capital accrued from the casinos ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of limitations requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is required to be mostly Thai; however, financial sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 1700, and even though visas are supposedly necessary to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is true of most border crossings.
The first Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only 1 gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked barge gambling den, features 150 slots and 60 tables. The Naga river boat never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of blackjack, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown before long followed. There are 150 one armed bandits and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 slot machines and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and ninety six table games, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and sixty six of the familiar gaming tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slots and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a multinational resort and hotel building that contains many amenities aside from the gambling hall, which houses ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 slot machines and 88 table games.
