There is a fascinating story to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just over the border from next door Thailand, in which gambling den gaming is not permitted. Eight casinos are established in a relatively small space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent area, a 3 to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The astonishing income gained from the casinos ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than 12.5 million, and there are a couple of controls requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mostly Thai; however, financial sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and even though visas are for all intents and purposes necessary to cross, there are methods around this, as is accurate of most border crossings.
The original Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked bateau gambling hall, contains 150 slot machine games and sixty table games. The Naga gambling hall never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of chemin de fer, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are 150 slot machine games and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred one armed bandits and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and ninety six table games, including 87 baccarat (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and sixty six of the common table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive resort and hotel complex that highlights numerous comforts in addition to the gambling den, which houses ten thousand sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slots and 88 tables.
